New house on site of disused chalk quarry
A major new house in Hampshire designed using principles of environmental sustainability and the latest thinking in passive solar heating and energy saving systems, whilst reinterpreting the classical architectural tradition. The house takes advantage of the orientation of the site; the south elevation is almost entirely glazed to maximise passive solar gain, with balconies providing shade to each successive floor. Two semi-circular projecting bays provide vertical emphasis and a continuous colonnade forms a gentle arc across the entire lower ground level. Chimneys and bracketed eaves add visual interest at high level. The building is finished in stone render with a slate roof, with some elements in hard chalk or clunch excavated directly from the site.
