Major Urban Extension at Whitfield, Dover
A masterplan for 5,750 new houses with shops, schools and community facilities near the village of Whitfield near Dover. The plan is a radical approach to the major expansion of a village and was the outcome of close cooperation with the local community and a private planning initiative. It followed the controversial allocation of housing around Whitfield separated by the A2 but on the northern edge of Dover. A chain of six distinct neighbourhoods or villages, separated by landscape, are clustered around the existing village. Guided by detailed landscape studies, the neighbourhoods or villages each have their own identity and will be developed one after another. The low density village of Whitfield retains its distinct character and boundaries but would benefit from the new infrastructure and facilities made possible by the numbers of new residents.
